Supplier COA vs Independent COA: How to Review Both
Compare supplier-issued and independent laboratory documentation without assuming that document origin alone determines analytical quality.
Understand document origin
A supplier COA is issued within the supplier's quality or release process. An independent report is produced by a separate laboratory for a submitted sample. Each can contribute evidence, but the origin, sample chain and scope should be transparent.
Independent testing reduces some conflicts of interest, yet it still depends on correct sample identity, suitable methods and complete reporting.
Compare like with like
Confirm that documents refer to the same batch and stated material. Compare methods, units, specifications, dates and sample preparation before comparing numeric results.
Differences do not automatically mean one report is wrong. Method selectivity, detector response, integration and calculation basis can produce results that are not directly interchangeable.
Prefer transparent evidence
Look for identifiable laboratories, report references, method information and traceable batch fields. Treat screenshots, unlabelled charts and isolated percentages as incomplete evidence.
Document any discrepancy and request clarification. Supplier qualification and laboratory judgement remain necessary.
